Each November, the PAWs team gets a chance to highlight the efforts of some of our talented community members charged with supporting Military Students, Student Veterans, and their families. As a leader across several of these initiatives, Heather Albin, Strategy Manager of Military & Veteran Services, kicks us off with this message, “Ashford University is proud of our student veterans and committed to supporting all of you through achievement of your educational goals.”
Looking at a few of the key items on her radar, Heather calls out Ashford’s Military Resource Center. “Ashford has a great online Military Resource Center. It includes access to resources both internal to the University and national external resources…you can access it at military.ashford.edu.” And for our active duty students, Heather and her team encourage a closer look at the Military Outreach Team. These folks travel to each installation at least once during the year for face-to-face engagement opportunities and support.
But don’t worry because that’s not all! Enter Kiri Storlie, Student Success Program Coordinator and a primary point of contact for Ashford’s peer to peer mentoring program. “The CHAMPS peer mentoring program has a customized track for service members,” shares Kiri. To give us a quick peak, Kiri calls out what we can expect when joining, “From the very first milestone, Getting Connected, we introduce an understanding of how critical peers can be to transitioning veterans.”
As we wrap up this month, Heather reminds viewers of the easiest ways to stay connected. “Join the Student Veteran Organization which is currently hosted on LinkedIn and sign up for the Military Community Newsletter which you can access at military.ashford.edu.”
From all of us at Ashford University, we are grateful for each and everyone one of you and the sacrifice you and your families have provided to us through your service. Thank you and happy Veterans Day.
